Expecting twins (or more)? This book's for you!

This book is especially for those mamas who find themselves in the joyful (and frightening) position of hearing the news--two little bodies, two heartbeats, or perhaps even more than two! Expecting twins, (or triplets, quadruplets and more, called supertwins), means that your pregnancy will almost certainly look different than mothers expecting only one baby.

When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads does an excellent job of covering both the challenges of multiple pregnancy, as well as ways in which pregnancy will probably be different for mothers who find themselves expecting more than one baby. It is a perfect blend of factual information with encouraging stories from mothers who have been there.

The information in this book talks about what you as the mother can do to reduce risks for yourself and your babies. It covers weight gain in detail, both how much to gain for optimal health of your babies, as well as practical suggestions for gaining that weight. It also covers possible pregnancy complications, including what symptoms to look out for.

The author also discusses what your options are for multiple birth, going through specifics of what factors determine whether you will be able to try for a vaginal birth or whether you will need a c-section to deliver your babies.

One of my favorite parts of the book talks about how to manage caring for two or more babies. The authors give many concrete suggestions for dealing with the overwhelming task of caring for multiple newborns, especially details on feeding, whether breastfeeding, bottlefeeding or both.

I found this book to be empowering--acknowledging that growing two or more healthy babies is a big challenge, but presenting concrete information for how to handle those challenges in a way that I never found patronizing. When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads is a book I would recommend to any pregnant mother of multiples.

This book is my new favorite resource for breastfeeding. The authors unravel so many of the misconceptions about breastfeeding that can leave new mothers with sore nipples, inadequate milk supply, and ready to give up on breastfeeding altogether. They discuss the biology of breastfeeding in language that every mommy brain can understand, laying out the reasons why certain actions, especially in the first couple of weeks, can make breastfeeding work better and set mothers and babies up for long term successful breastfeeding. The best time to read this book would be in late pregnancy, but mothers at any point in a breastfeeding relationship could benefit from the information in this book.

My Top 5: Pregnancy, Birth and Breastfeeding Books

I am a reader--I have to read every day or the day feels empty somehow. And as exciting as finding information on the internet can be, my one true love, literarily speaking, is books. When my literary passion for books meets my great passion for birth, it gives me a thrill. Reading books about birth? Yes, please!

Over the years, I’ve read a lot of books about birth and breastfeeding, pretty much every single one I could get my hands on. (I’m not exaggerating.) I gleaned little nuggets of information from every one of them, but of course, some of them really stood out from the others as both well-written books and genuinely helpful guides through the complex process of pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.

I know that when you’re an expectant parent, time is SHORT. You don’t have time to read anything but the best of the best. So that is why I have created this list of the top five pregnancy and breastfeeding books I have ever read. I have included the links to these books on Amazon, but if you are frugally minded like me, never fear, they are all available through the public library.
  1. The Big Book of Birth-Erica Lyon This book is a user-friendly and straightforward guide to the entire labor and delivery process. The author does an excellent job of telling the reader what happens during birth and how to cope during each stage of the process, in addition to information about possible medical interventions that may be needed during the birth. A must read for anyone who hasn’t been able to take a childbirth education course, or for brushing up on your knowledge if you’ve given birth before.
  2. Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn-Penny Simkin For a comprehensive pregnancy and birth guide, this is what I recommend. Packed with evidence based information, this book allows you to be informed of all your options. The book covers having a healthy pregnancy and potential complications, as well as information about eating and exercise during pregnancy. It also contains a lengthy section to help you prepare for labor and birth. If you could only buy one pregnancy and birth book, this should be it.
  3. The Doula Guide to Birth-Ananda Lowe Most of the go-to pregnancy and birth books cover the same handful of topics, but in this book, Lowe gives a fresh spin to preparing for and getting through labor and birth. She offers many ideas for managing the process and challenges of labor that anyone can use.
  4. The Natural Pregnancy Book-Aviva Jill Romm For the granola moms out there, this is your pregnancy book. Romm’s book covers what you need to know about pregnancy and birth, but with a natural flair. She incorporates detailed information about using herbs during pregnancy, as well as natural treatments for many of the complaints of pregnancy.
  5. The Complete Book of Breastfeeding-Laura Marks An excellent reference on breastfeeding is worth having on hand before you’re trying to figure out why your baby is screaming at 3:00 in the morning, and this guide is both thorough and approachable. If you can read some before giving birth, that's even better!
